With great power, there must also come great responsibility:
So, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse just released and it’s… really good. Like, overwhelmingly good. Like, I can’t say everything I need to say in a single video kind of good.
Everything that was great about the first movie, this movie takes it and steps it up. The animation is more gorgeous than ever, the soundtrack is incredible, each character is so layered and complex. There’s so much happening in every single frame that it’s impossible to get the full experience on just one viewing.
And I have so much to say about it. About the animation, the story structure, the cliffhanger ending, the characterization of Miguel O’Hara as well as all the other cameos and Spider-People like Insomniac and Spectacular Spider-Man, my favorite character of Hobie Brown as Spider-Punk, the different allegories and metaphorical lenses one can view this movie through and the core message that makes this movie stand apart as more than just “Part 1” and instead as its own movie.

The transformation of Spider-Man into the Spider-Man Symbiote, also known as Venom, has gone through several iterations in the comics, movies, and other media over the years. Here are some key moments in the evolution of this transformation:
The Amazing Spider-Man 252 (1984): The first appearance of the black costume. In this comic book issue, Spider-Man is on an alien planet during the “Secret Wars” storyline, and he discovers a machine that creates a new black and white costume for him. Unbeknownst to him, the costume is actually a symbiotic alien organism that bonds with him and enhances his powers.
The Amazing Spider-Man 258 (1984): The first hints of the symbiote’s true nature are revealed in this issue. Spider-Man discovers that the costume is alive and trying to take control of his body. He manages to free himself from its grip, but the symbiote escapes and later bonds with Eddie Brock, becoming Venom.
Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994-1998): This popular cartoon series adapted the symbiote storyline and added some new twists. In this version, the symbiote is shown to have a more overtly sinister nature and is depicted as a creature from another dimension. Spider-Man eventually rejects the symbiote and it bonds with Eddie Brock, who becomes Venom.
Spider-Man 3 (2007): The third film in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy features the symbiote storyline, with the black costume appearing as a result of Peter Parker finding it during a science experiment. The film’s version of the symbiote is somewhat different from the comic book version, with more emphasis placed on its corrupting influence on Peter’s personality.
Ultimate Spider-Man (2000-2011): This comic book series reimagined Spider-Man’s origin story for a new generation. In this version, the black costume is revealed to be a genetically altered version of Spider-Man’s own suit, created by his archenemy Norman Osborn. The symbiote’s origin and behavior are also somewhat different, with more emphasis placed on its parasitic nature.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018): This animated film introduced a new version of Spider-Man, Miles Morales, who becomes the Spider-Man of his universe after being bitten by a radioactive spider. In one memorable sequence, he discovers an alternate version of Peter Parker who has been taken over by the symbiote and become a monstrous version of Spider-Man.
